The River Market district contains the City Market farmer’s market and runs north of downtown to the Missouri River. It is a historical area because it is the location where Kansas City was first founded. Westport Landing, its other name, was the Missouri River dock that took goods going to Westport about three miles to the south.
River Quay, the third name for the area, came about in the 1970s to mark the neighborhood’s early French incarnation as a fur trading post. The developer that coined the name wanted to make the neighborhood a destination place full of restaurants and kitschy shops.
It turned pretty much into that, now featuring restaurants, shops, bars, cafes and ethnic markets.
The Arabia Steamboat Museum
This history museum holds artifacts salvaged from the ill-fated Arabia, a steamboat that sank in 1856 in the Missouri River. Just opened in 1991, the 30,000 square foot museum claims to house the largest collection of pre-Civil War artifacts in the world.
Downtown Kansas City
Downtown Kansas City possesses a rich culture in arts, several cool fountains, upscale shopping and local cuisine, especially BBQ. In fact, in 2012, Forbes magazine choose Downtown Kansas City as one of America’s Best Downtowns.
